Being a part of the Honors community has its benefits
- Personalized Attention — With small class sizes, all Shawnee State students receive personalized attention from faculty. As an Honors student, you are matched with an Honors Mentor, a special faculty member who provides advice and support throughout your education.

Experiential Learning — Honors students receive up to $1,000 to support education outside of the classroom. This money can be used for field study, Study Abroad, clinical experiences, participation in apprenticeships, fellowships, internships, or practicums, or other activities that enhance education.
- Scholarship Opportunities — Incoming students with a high school GPA of 3.8 or above and an ACT score of 30 or higher are eligible for the Presidential Scholarship. This scholarship covers tuition and fees (excluding housing, meal plan, and residential fees). There is no additional application as we will use the information provided on your admission application. For best consideration, apply for admission to SSU by April 1.
- Priority Registration — Honors students receive priority registration dates, helping you tailor your schedule to best meet your education goals and timeline.
- Honors & Scholars Living Learning Community — You may apply to live in special campus housing with your Honors peers, helping you make friends who share your passion for learning.
- Co-curricular Experience — As an Honors student, each semester you will have an opportunity to participate in learning events such as special field trips and related activities.
- Research — You will have the opportunity each year to participate in research and present your work at our Honors Symposia.
- Honors Curriculum — Honors students take the Introduction to Honors course, 9-12 credits of independent study courses that are specially tailored to help you get the most from your education, and complete the Honors capstone.
- Honors Regalia — When it's time to graduate, we want you to proudly celebrate your achievements. Honors students receive a special medal worn during commencement.

About the Honors Program at SSU
How do I join the Honors Program?
Admission into the Honors Program at Shawnee State University is selective and competitive. If you're a new SSU student and meet the following minimum criteria, we invite you to apply for the Honors program:
- Minimum ACT composite score of 26 or SAT combined score of 1240
- Minimum High School GPA of 3.5
- Completion of Honors Program Application including essay and two letters of recommendation
Current SSU students who meet the following minimum selection criteria are also invited to apply:
- Minimum cumulative SSU GPA of 3.3
- Completion of Honors Program Application including essay and one letter of recommendation from an SSU faculty member
Maintaining Honors Status
To remain in the Honors Program, participate fully in the program:
- Maintain good academic standing (GPA at least 3.3)
- Complete the required Honors Curriculum
- Attend the three Honors Symposia each year and present at one
- Engage in one experiential learning endeavor (practicum, fellowship, study abroad, etc) with reflection and feedback
- Participate in one Honors Co-curricular experience each semester (field trip, conference, special lecture)
