Studying Biology, Biomedical Sciences (pre-med track) at Shawnee State University, Ava Intelisano has always been drawn to the outdoors. Her love for hiking, bird watching, plant identification and being in nature inspired her and a group of friends to establish the Outdoor Adventure Club on campus.
“I’ve always enjoyed spending time outside, and once I came to Shawnee State, I realized a lot of other students did too,” Intelisano said. “We wanted to create a place where people who appreciate nature could connect, explore and find community. That’s how the Outdoor Adventure Club started.”
Originally from Middlefield, Ohio, Intelisano chose SSU for its strong science programs and welcoming campus environment. Within the natural science department, she also participates in the Chemistry Club, Pre-Med Club and TriBeta, organizations she says foster a supportive network of students who share similar goals.
“The Biomedical Sciences program has given me so many opportunities,” she said. “The faculty in the natural science department are amazing. They encourage questions, care about our success and connect what we learn in class with real-world applications.”
Her coursework has been both rigorous and rewarding.
“The subject matter is challenging, but in a mentally stimulating way,” Intelisano said. “It’s interesting, relevant and pushes me to think like a future surgeon. Smaller upper-level classes also mean more one-on-one interaction with professors, which helps with understanding difficult topics and preparing for medical school.”
The Outdoor Adventure Club gives students a chance to balance that academic intensity with time outside. The club organizes hikes, nature walks, plant identification outings and other outdoor experiences in the region’s scenic landscapes.
“Being outdoors is refreshing, and it’s a great way to meet people,” Intelisano said. “We’ve seen students from all majors join the club because they want to explore, relax or try something new.”
Set to graduate in 2028, Intelisano has already been conditionally accepted to Ohio University’s Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, where she will attend after completing her degree at Shawnee State.
When offering advice to new or prospective students, she encourages them to get involved academically and socially.
“Sit in the front of the classroom, ask questions and take the lead in your labs,” she said. “Definitely join clubs—especially those within the natural sciences. Chemistry Club, Pre-Med Club, TriBeta and of course the Outdoor Adventure Club all help you learn, grow and find community."
